Re. RATTLE FROM GEAR BOX. X3426

We have always been up against this trouble to a certain extent, but as the point was raised by Sales Dept. some months ago as being objectionable in trials cars, we took the matter up and it was arranged with the Drawing Office for the clearance in the side shaft gears to be specified as maximum .006", minimum .004", the previous limits being double this amount.

The Works went to considerable trouble to obtain this and even now are having considerable trouble in maintaining it.

At the same time We now feel that to a great extent the rattle complained of, and which is manifest on test, is less pronounced, but still exists during warm weather and when the car has been run for some time and when the oil is in a particularly thin condition.

We are still however, receiving complaints from Sales Department that this rattle is objectionable, and although we have inspected the cars complained of, we find that the clearance is to the limits above specified.

The gear box returned by them from a chassis last week as unsatisfactory was found on examination to have .005 to .006 back lash in the continuous gears.

We still feel that Sales Department are not satisfied on this point, but at the same time we do not feel that we can confine the Works to any closer limits as far as clearance is concerned, and we feel that some attention is required so that an alteration can be made to the present standard.

We appreciate that this trouble can be reduced, in fact, cured, by using thicker oil in the gear box, but we have made a definite point of carrying out Mr. Royce's instructions by using standard gear oil, i.e Prices Amber "A" Gear Oil for all the year round.

Springfield are also suffering from this trouble which they call "bubbling" and were very anxious to hear from me what cure we had for this at Derby. They themselves have already taken advantage of the smaller clearances, but
