TESTS ON R.R. STEERING
COLUMN AND BOX.

These tests were carried out on an R.R. steering column and box made up to F.100894.

The following measurements were determined :-

(1) Total weight of wheel, column, box and drop arm.
(2) The overall ratio and ratio at mid. position of travel.
(3) The efficiency on forward and reverse drives.

The steering column and box were mounted so that the column and drop arm shaft were horizontal and the drop arm was so placed on its splines that it was horizontal in the mid. position of its travel.

A given weight was suspended from the drop arm and the weight suspended from the periphery of the steering wheel so adjusted that - (a) For forward efficiency - it would just fall at a very slow steady speed - (b) For reverse efficiency - it would just rise at a very slow steady speed.

The overall ratio was determined by measuring the overall angular movements of the wheel and drop arm.

The mid. position ratio was determined by measuring the angular movement of the wheel corresponding to a movement of the end of the drop arm between 1/2° either side of its mid. position.

Results.

Total weight of wheel, column, box and drop arm = 24 lbs. 11 ozs.

Measured mid. position ratio = 10.12

Mid. position ratio calculated from dimensions of mechanism = 10.09

Overall movement of wheel = 2 revolutions + 170° = 737°

Overall movement of drop arm = 78.6°

Overall ratio = 737 / 78.6 = 9.38
