1030 Myth 700 To Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} c. to Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/HH. Jnr.{Charles L. Jenner}2/JH.3.10.40. 10 H.P. M.40. Please receive herewith PL.358. This is a modification to PL.316 and 318 relating to the rear face of the crankcase. We have sacrificed the simplicity of having all surfaces flush at the rear in order to bring the flywheel about .875 nearer to the last journal bearing. Herewith PL.349. Showing the Smith electric sump oil level gauge, owing to the limitations imposed by the installation of the engine in the chassis; the sump is shallow but made wide to carry the requisite amount of oil. In consequence the difference between full and empty is less than usual calling for a stroke of 62° instead of 70° on the oil gauge float also the length of float arm can only be 1.75. We shall have to approach Smiths about this, because we know that they say that an arm under 2" is inclined to stick. Herewith PL.361. Dip Stick. The object of fitting a dip stick is for the initial filling of the engine when accuracy is desired. Jnr.{Charles L.
