Dict. 12.11.38. Messrs. Rolls Royce Ltd., Derby. Dear Sirs, Attention of C. T. Salt, Esq. We thank you for your letter of the 11th inst., in connection with AC.9 bearings for Ruston & Hornsby. We would certainly advise the oil groove in the crank-case, in view of the groove running round the exterior of the bearing. When the tests have been run I will advise you of any possibility of viewing the engine, so that we can go along together to examine same. We take this opportunity of thanking you very much for the time given to us at the meeting which was held between your people, Messrs. High Duty Alloys, and ourselves in connection with this AC.9 material, and we feel that we have now made some progress as regards knowing what your practice has been, and will do, as we have agreed, that is we will cast a number of bearings, forwarding one-third of the batch to your goodselves, one-third to High Duty Alloys and retain one-third here, so that we can each check the analyses of these bearings, each heat treat these bearings, which I would suggest should be strictly to the specification laid down, that is 12 hours for the first heat treatment at 180ºC., and the second period of 12 hours at the same temperature, and that we should each record the Brinell hardness figures obtained, both on the un-heat treated casting and also after each heat treatment operation. This would then give us definite information as to where any of us are in error, as regards either heat treatment or the method of obtaining the hardness [Handwritten Notes] [Top center]: 1020a.
