X5300 Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} from R.{Sir Henry Royce} c. to BJ. Wor.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} 20 HP. STARTER. X.3650 RR. IMPROVED BIJUR. X.3587 X.5300 Since Mr. Hancock has found some defects and cures, we ought to push on with proving these first modifications with our further suggestions for reliability. (1) Single cone or spherical washer, plus lighter holding off spring, making a cure for sticking in out position. (2) Increased spring for preliminary friction increased in strength from 7 to 12 lbs., plus R's idea of double cork surface to increase preliminary torque three times. (3) We consider that the present scheme is self-jamming and could theoretically have a very heavy shock at complete engagement, and that R's idea shewn on drg. provides sufficient pressure on clutch for nearly stalling torque of motor, but prevents the jamming torque rising above a pre-determined maximum which is sufficient for a cold engine, after which the clutch would slip. All these ideas are applicable to present space and parts, and proving them should be pressed forward with a view to early standardisation. The parts affected should be stopping in production, and only enough made to provide for immediate output, because most of these may ultimately need changing. R.{Sir Henry Royce} | ||
