X. 235 To BY. {R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} from DA. {Bernard Day - Chassis Design} c. to CJ. Hs. {Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} DAL/M22. 2. 26. HYDRAULIC SHOCK DAMPERS. We send herewith A.Sch.2145 shewing the modifi- cations which R. {Sir Henry Royce} has suggested to overcome the valve chattering and to prevent dirty oil getting into the working parts. We suggest that as the arrangement shewn on fig.1. is R's latest instruction, you should work to that instead of fig.2., which is based on an earlier memo. We also think that the filter in the bottom of the body of the shock damper instead of the filter at the oil filler is likely to be preferred. We have indicated a modification to the piston which eliminates some of the air space above the low pressure relief valve, and we have shewn an increase in the size of the links to deal with the fracture just reported, though we feel sure that the latter is due to the use of mild steel instead of nickel steel.
