TO HS.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} FROM DA.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design} ORIGINAL DA{Bernard Day - Chassis Design}8/M20.3.26. PHANTOM SPRINGING. X8410 We have gone a little further into the question of the disposition of the weights on the Phantom with reference to the spring stiffness somewhat on the lines of Professor Guest's paper before the Institution. According to this there are two points, one in front and one behind the centre of gravity, which are peculiarly good for the position of the front and back seats respectively. They are such that when either the front or the back springs move they receive simple harmonic motion only. They are also such that when motion is imparted to one point there is no resulting motion at the other point. When we altered the stiffness of the front springs we altered the position of both these points. We are endeavouring to determine on paper to some extent what this is, but we wonder whether an experimental investigation could be carried on parallel with us, because with the data at our disposal our results are likely to be not very accurate, though they may give an indication?
