Dear Sirs, Replying to your letter of March 27th enclosing drawing of Thermostat Unit, 13884, we are afraid that it will not be possible to make up the unit exactly as shown. The rate of our No.2 bellows is approximately 96 lbs. per inch, and the vapour pressure of ethyl alcohol at 15°C. is approximately - 12 lbs. and at 75°C. - 2 lbs. You will see that there is insufficient power available to move the bellows themselves without doing any additional work. While we do not know the purpose for which you require this thermostat, it occurs to us that there may be other factors which would influence the movement of the bellows, such as a gland packing. If our supposition is correct we would recommend that the bellows be charged with something giving a very much greater pressure than ethyl alcohol, adjustment of the position of the bellows being given by a spring. If you care to let us have full particulars of the scheme for which this thermostat is required we shall be very pleased to make our recommendations. You may rest assured, of course, that any information that you may give to us will be treated in strict | ||
