4110 TO MR. C. to E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} C. to MX.{John H Maddocks - Chief Proving Officer} HS{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/smth, 4/JH,19.5.36. Bentley Trials Coupé B-2-GA. The clutch on this car was jaggering badly, and on examination we found that due to incorrect assembly by the makers, the pad of one of the operating fingers was .035 more depressed than the other two with the clutch engaged. This caused an out of parallelism of .008 between the pressure plate and the flywheel when the former was withdrawn and hence a jaggering take up. We replaced the clutch by another and the take up was perfectly satisfactory when we handed the car over to S. We have found the same fault in one or two other Bentley clutches which have jaggered. We have taken up the question of the setting of the operating fingers with Borg & Beck, and they are going to take special precautions in the future to ensure that this is correctly done.
