Coverley - Production Engineer} E/HDY.{William Hardy}2/HP.11.9.36. Phantom III Gearbox. We send herewith N.Sch.4902 showing a strengthened universal ring for the 2nd speed coupling to N.Sch.4824. It is found that there is considerable distortion of the ring when under load, and in our opinion a large increase of strength and stiffness is essential. We secure an increase of between 3 and 4 times in stiffness by the modifications shewn by the main scheme. The main scheme requires a sliding piece with a bore .050 larger indiameter. This weakens this piece of course, but we think it will stand the reduction. Various other small alterations have been made to obtain the increased dimensions of the ring. The spring rings must be allowed only just the necessary clearance for assembling. The temporary scheme should not be detailed as we do not think it will be required.
