RE PACKING BETWEEN CYLINDER AND CRANKCASE.
X.4146.

Referring to my previous correspondence under this heading, in reply to your memo pointint out that it would be desirable, from your point of view, to have a low compression piston and a high compression piston of such dimensions that no liner was required in either case, Hm{Capt. W. Hallam - Head Repairs}, has replied to me, stating that he is very strongly, in favour of the liner in one case or the other, and EP.{G. Eric Platford - Chief Quality Engineer} is also strongly of the same opinion.

At present the liner is fitted, as you are aware, to the low compression engine can by removing the liner a high compression engine can be produced. This certainly seems a desirable method of modifying from one type to the other quickly and cheaply, and is a scheme which has been in force ever since I have been at the works. In view of this therefore I think we should be very chary abut modifying the position.
