O.S. Rear Damper Lever FW.1200 from
Wraith Bumper Chassis.
Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} (FWK. 16/JH. 6.1.39.)

This S/N lever failed after 42 hours on the bumper test.
The fracture - see photo.M.1784/1 indicates failure in fatigue from the sharp edge at "X".
Magnetic crack test and subsequent micro-examination, revealed two more cracks in this edge about half an inch from the fracture. These were of the nature of small laps - note the oxide and decarburisation in photomicrograph M.1784/2 and M.1784/3.
The Brinell hardness was 295 and the micro-structure apart from the laps mentioned was quite satisfactory.
