X1300 Exptl. Dept. Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/FJH.{Fred J. Hardy - Chief Dev. Engineer}6/KW. 29th May, 1936. Commdr. F.G. Matravers, The Adamant Engineering Co.Ltd., Dallow Road, LUTON. Dear Commdr. Matravers, We thank you for your letter of the 27th inst., and note that the whole of the 405 rollers must have the old radius of track. For the time being we have decided to use these rollers and to alter the inner race only. This should give a considerable improvement as the relative curvature between the ball and the inner race is greater than that between the ball and the outer race. We shall carry out some rig tests to determine the amount of this improvement. The writer has been looking further into the question of the accuracy of cam bores and the attached list shows the bore of a number of cams you have supplied to our production people. As you will notice, they vary from 1.1244 to 1.1270 whereas the specified size is 1.1240 to 1.1250. At present we are grinding the steering tubes to suit individual cams and even if we pressed the tubes into the cams we should still have to do this. We would be very glad if, in view of these figures, you would confirm that we must not expect any improvement in the cam bores. If this is so we will reconsider the design in order to facilitate accurate production. Yours truly, FOR ROLLS-ROYCE LIMITED. | ||
