To Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} and By.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} From RHC.{R. H. Coverley - Production Engineer} Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} 1152 RHC{R. H. Coverley - Production Engineer}/GL.{G. Linnett}1/MJ.1.2.37. Re. 3rd. Speed Helical Gears, Ground by the Gear Grinding Co. Ltd. We have investigated the complaint outlined in Roy{Sir Henry Royce}/AW.26/IB.26.1.37 and although it is appreciated since the 18th. January, 22 pairs of third speed Helicals G55797/G55810 have been received from The Gear Grinding Co. Ltd., the standard they have produced is not good enough for our requirements, and the greatest difficulty is experienced in getting the best of these gears passed off test particularly so when they are compared with ones that are ground elsewhere. Under BY.1/G.11.1.37 we were informed that consistent results could not be guaranteed by them, we were therefore forced to arrange for these gears to be ground elsewhere. With regard to the new machine that they are building we cannot afford to wait for this, because from past experiences we are doubtful if they can produce the standard necessary, and it is quite erroneous to think they ever have, therefore for the present, in the light of this we see no particular advantage in purchasing from them.
