We find that on maximum bump the propellor shaft just fouls the cross member. The clearance with the car standing is 3.750 with a rear buffer clearance of 4.750"

FRONT AXLE AND BRAKES TO LOP G 77305 MODIFICATION TO AXLE PIVOTS FOR AIR VESSEL TO NS{Norman Scott} 2796 UL 307

The O/S brake drum was very much scored through the excessive braking. The brake linings became dry and the inside of the drums, brake mechanism was covered with black powder. Under these conditions squeaks were prevalent. We have since reduced the percentage of front braking which is giving us results equal to the present Phantom. The general condition of the pivot bearings, brake toggle bearings is very good. The lubrication of the pivots, side steering arm front ball ends has been quite ample. We took the restrictions out of the bijurs suppling the cross steering tube ball ends and with this arrangement ample lubrication has been supplied to them. We have since run 6000 miles without further trouble. Examination at the finish of milage there was a good film of oil on the contacts and spheros. We have lubricated the front axle every 500 miles, the Enots gun being screwed up until the back pressure was felt then released

CROSS STEERING TUBE TO LOP G 77483 NS{Norman Scott} 2797

This cross steering tube fould the front shock dampers when brakes were applied and was the primary cause of the braking of the shock dampers. The new cross steering tube with the double set is quite satisfactory and does not foul the dampers.

FRONT SPRINGS AND FITTINGS TO LOP F 79626 FIRTHS SILICO MANGANESE STEEL PIECE No F78791 2X 250 GROOVES AND OIL HOLES TO F 80467 NS{Norman Scott} 2782

We dismantled a front spring completely to examine the lubrication. The top and main leaves had a good film of oil the whole lengh.there was very little signs of scoring,no signs of rust, bedding of the leaves was fair. The three bottom leaves were rusty at the front ends and for approximatly four inches from the end. The rear portion had a light film of oil. There was no sign of fractures when examined. Shacle pins were well lubricated and showed little sign of wear.

FRONT AXLE CONTROL DAMPERS TO LOP F 79507 NS{Norman Scott} 2794/5 2817.

We have had two failures of the R/D damper. the cage braking in the neck the fractures being very similar to previous failures. The cause was chiefly due to fouling of the cross steering tube. We have carried out the various experiments with the loading of the dampers to Derby instructions. Full reports of these tests have been sent to Derby. The lubrication of the control are has been satisfactory.

REAR AXLE LOP G76880 GL{G. Linnett}316 11/41 I" HYPOID REAR BRAKES LOP G77288 NS{Norman Scott}2722

We cannot observe any failure of the axle casing from an outside examination. There has been a slight leak of oil from the pinion housing( the axle has developed a period at approximately 58 MPH and at 10-15 M.P.H. there is a period.
