H/S To E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} from Sg.{Arthur F. Sidgreaves - MD} To Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} from Sg.{Arthur F. Sidgreaves - MD} Copy to Wor.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} re Purchase of American Cars. Sg{Arthur F. Sidgreaves - MD}14/E16.2.34 Referring to former correspondence and discussions and Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}'s cable as given in Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}7/WJ.15.2.34, I should be glad to know what you now recommend that we should purchase. It looks rather as if we ought to accept his recommendation of purchasing a 16-cylinder Cadillac for the reasons he gives and for the reasons expressed in my Sg{Arthur F. Sidgreaves - MD}3/W19.1.34, and a 6-cylinder Terraplane for the investigation of smoothness on a 6-cylinder car, which may help us over the Bentley, which I feel convinced will have to remain a 6-cylinder for a good long time. We could easily buy the Terraplane over here but I should think the best way about the big car would be to let Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} buy one and send it over. I should be glad if E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} would let me know how the straight-8, which he is designing, compares for stroke with the recommendations made in the cable referred to.
