X1129 Exptl. Dept. Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Ed.{J. L. Edwards}15/KW. 11th May, 1936. Messrs. Rudge-Whitworth Ltd., COVENTRY. For the attention of Mr. Hack. Dear Sirs, Many thanks for your letter of the 9th inst., which has proved of considerable assistance. It is our standard practice when testing this unit, to run at maximum economy for maximum power, and this as you remark, leads to a considerable increase in exhaust valve temperature. With many of the tests we are carrying out at present, however, it is not possible to run at the coolest working temperature, and in several cases the maximum possible temperature has to be reached, such as when running consumption loops. We understand that an order has been placed for six exhaust valves, and as we now have a fair idea of the life of the valve under the conditions at which we run, it should be possible to remove the valves, and replace them before fracture occurs, and this is what we now propose doing. It is thought that some details of the fractures, and also of the brief analysis made, might be of some use to you, and accordingly we are having copies made of some micro-photographs of the valve structure, and as soon as these are ready will forward same on to you. | ||
