ORIGINAL To Da.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design} From As/Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}16/KT.17.6.31. (Y5410.) ROAD SPRINGS. You have now received the views of the spring makers on the type of front spring that you suggested. Their view is that the suggestion is not very sound because it leaves the stress range in the main plate unchanged, and this is the determining factor in the life of the spring. We attach a copy of the best suggestion Mr Stansfield of Firths can make. We should like your comments as we do not want to put these springs in hand unless you consider that the test will be useful. Another point is that we shall have a car running in France with the type of spring, which was bump tested, within a week or two.
