TRIAL OF LEA-FRANCIS 14 H.P. 6 CYL. CAR FITTED WITH HUMPHREY-SANDBERG FREE WHEEL.

The trial was run over a triangular course in Epping Forest. The course was taken once each way (1) with the free wheel locked and (2) with the free wheel in action.

Owing to the limited time available, a slightly shorter course was taken in each case on the reverse round - a portion consisting of second and third class roads being short circuited.

All measurements, etc., were taken by Messrs. Watson & Hingston.

The results were:-

Condition Total miles run Time Taken Mins. Average speed m.p.h. Petrol consumed pints Miles per gallon

Fixed wheel 21.1 * 48.5 26 8.6 19.65
Free wheel 21.1 * 46 27.4 7.25 23.28

Fuel economy - 15.7%

* The speedometer is driven forward of the free wheel so that the actual distance covered is not measured when the free wheel is in action. The 21.1 miles was the figure recorded when the free wheel was locked, when free the figure was 15.4 - showing that 5.7 miles were free wheeled out of the 21.1.
