10th January 1936.

Messrs. Rolls-Royce Ltd.,
DERBY.

For the attention of Mr. F.Ll. Smith.

Dear Sirs,

We thank you for your letter of the 8th instant and would advise that the 12 model 10.A3 production clutches required with the modified balancing and weaker thrust springs (coloured brown), as no doubt you are aware, were despatched yesterday per passenger train, and we trust are safely to hand.

With regard to the proposed application of our 11" clutch to the 20/25 HP chassis, we have investigated the possibility of utilising 105/115-lbs springs (coloured green). Whilst agreeing that these should give a /u of .200, you will appreciate that this is purely theoretical and does not take into account the anti-rattle spring reaction which is approximately 100-lbs, or make allowance for facing wear and spring set which is likely to be obtained. However, whilst the green springs may be satisfactory, we think it advisable in our mutual interest for you to carry out trials in this regard.

We have noted that you have again gone into the possibility of there being some extraordinary feature to account for the failure of two of our 10" clutches on your test bed and that you are satisfied that the balance of flywheel and clutch as a complete assembly was satisfactory.

We take it that you will be carrying out similar tests on clutches which are now being supplied to you and which incorporate the modified form of complete balance, and your further remarks in due course will be appreciated.

With reference to your remarks regarding the sample of your Phantom III pressure plate left with us, no doubt our physical and chemical analyses which were forwarded to you

Cont'd..........
