No. X4227 X4238 REF. Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/TMW1/LG30.5.24. OBJECT OF TEST. To test aluminium washers in place of C.A. fitted to Induction and Exhaust Pipes - 20 HP. chassis. BY14/P26.10.23. TESTER. T. M.{Mr Moon / Mr Moore} Warwick. CONDITIONS. A set made from annealed aluminium sheet were fitted to 3-G-11 2.11.23., and have since run 2688 miles to date. SUMMARY OF TEST. We do not consider the aluminium to be suitable for the 20 HP. engine. We attach samples (to BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer}) showing how some are squeezed, but not sufficiently to make an air-tight joint with others. Aluminium might be suitable if all the faces could be surface-plated and let down; this is not practicable however on the cylinder head and block at the same time. The trouble referred to in EP{G. Eric Platford - Chief Quality Engineer}1/H23.10.23 will disappear altogether when the abolition of the starting carburetter passage is standardised, so long as the machining of the faces is reasonably accurate. In the meantime, this latter point should be watched as it is a probable cause of the failures. Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/TMW. | ||
