A.{Mr Adams} Robotham Esq. Messrs Rolls-Royce Ltd. Belper, Nr. Derby. Dear Roy{Sir Henry Royce}, Thank you for your letter of January 3rd. I have written to Baird sending him an outline drawing of a Transmitter suitable for the Meteor engine and telling him that I shall be in Birmingham for the latter half of next week and will get in touch with him. The "12 1/2 in" Transmitter would not be suitable for any engine bigger than your 4 1/4 litre. It is the size fitted to my Humber and the weight of the Humber empty is about 35 cwt. The scheme which we were preparing for your Bentley originally was never finished as we wanted certain further information which was asked for in my letter of May 4th. 1942. At that stage you decided that you were not justified in going on with the conversion at all, owing to the war and the position of Rolls-Royce Ltd. and yourself. Our scheme was to fit the transmitter with a suitable bell-housing to your chassis and to accomodate our epicyclic gear, giving forward, neutral and reverse in a new casing specially designed and made to take care of your speedometer drive and brake servo mechanism. It was thought desirable to operate forward, neutral and reverse by means of a lever placed in a position very similar to your existing gear lever. I am enclosing drawings showing particulars of the general scheme which we had in mind at the time and I will send you within the next two days a General Arrangement drawing of the transmitter and our standard reverse gear, as fitted on the ordinary car. Perhaps you will then let me know whether you approve in principle the scheme on which we were working. | ||
