The Controller, Technical Dept. the design of the piston may be better than that of some other makers, we certainly tax the piston perhaps more than in many other engines, owing to high speeds and high explosive pressures. We think we can only watch the actual pistons in practical service and fix a life according to experience. We think, however, that aluminium pistons are such an absolute necessity to a high speed aero engine, that even if the whole of those in service were changed after even 250 hours of running, we ought to continue to use them.
