RE "GOSHAWK II" - CONNECTING ROD AND PISTON.

We send you herewith drawing No. LeC.1395 shewing the above.

A model in wood should be made of the combustion space to determine the compression volume before the exact height of the piston can be decided. Pistons should be made to a ratio of 5 to 1.

In dealing with the cylinder head of "Goshawk II", Mr. Royce desired that it should be left rough cast with a radius in the corner graduated from .100 opposite the valves to .800 on the transverse section of the engine. Machining only should be done on the metal immediately surrounding the valve faces in the form of a flat panel about 1.750 wide, and having a .100 radius on the edge of the cutter, as in sketch -

It was thought also that the mouth of the combustion space might be machined to a depth of about .300". This method of treating the combustion space is different to that specified for the Buzzard, as shewn on LeC.1276.
