RE CROSS STEERING TUBES.

With reference to this matter Mr. Royce instructs that we should only deal with these cross steering tubes in future as they come into our repair depots, as he thinks that this policy will meet the requirements of the case. This ruling is based on Mr. Hanbury's report H3/TH/26.6.19. You enquire in your P/T19/F22.7.19 whether it shall be confirmed that in cases where the "whirlwind" inspection has been made we should carry out our promise and send fitters to fit the new type cross steering tube. In those cases in which a definite promise to the effect that new steering tubes shall be fitted has been given, this should be carried out, but in all other cases Mr. Royce's ruling should be adhered to. It is not clear from your note whether in the case of the SO2 chassis which have been inspected that promises have been given in all cases. It rather appears that we have been over anxious in this matter and in those cases in which it is possible by a judicious letter to avoid the fitting of these tubes without raising doubt in the mind of the customer we should do so. If you are not clear on any point in connection with this matter will you please see me.

Will Mr. Wormald please confirm to me that he is in agreement. I do not think we should put the Company to greater expense than is necessary in this matter.
