X8380 Y8940a X8430 Y8770 MODIFICATIONS FOR 'Z' SERIES, AND NEXT CAR TO FRANCE. The following modifications should be on the next car to run in France, and the production arranged for these modifications at once:- (1) STEERING. Toe-in should be avoided - i.e. parallel wheels in plan. (2) Centre point steering should be altered to 1" out, but the king post should be as near centre line of wheel as possible, and wheels should be upright so that there is no need of toe-in, but about 1° should be left for slacks, so that the human eye should not think the axle has given way. (3) Axle and hub parts should be machined so that the parts are to the dimensions shewn on the drawing. Stub axles are also heavier: further lightening has been instructed for test. (4) The brake carrier should be an aluminium casting and duralumin sheet. (5) Damping friction should be as follows - both pivots simple plain thrusts, and ball joints in crosssteering tube should have springs at each end, thrusting balls outwards. Wear will result in toe-in but adjustment is made on the outside so that this can be corrected. These springs might help to reduce the max stress on the cross steering tube, and prevent rattles.
