-3-(a) It was clear from the breakage that the original point of failure was at the bottom of the tube, whereas, if the steering stresses had been the primary cause, one would have expected to find it at the side. The tube failed at the sudden change in section where the lug, by which it is attached to the frame member, is brazed on to the tube. AS REGARDS THE RUNNING OF THE CAR, THE FOLLOWING POINTS CALL FOR ATTENTION : FRONT WHEEL BRAKES. (a) Front Wheel Brake Servo Jaggers. These are very bad on this car now, and can only be prevented by the greatest delicacy of handling. (b) Servo Gear Rattles. These spoil the otherwise smooth running of the engine. They are specially noticeable about 27.m.p.h. again at higher speeds, and on the retard. They can be damped out by just taking up the servo clearances with the footbrake pedal, and there appears to be no doubt whatever that they originate in the servo gears themselves. (c) Brakes Squeaking. The brakes now squeak on every occasion of application and the noise is steadily getting worse. STEERING. (a) The car wanders, and is very difficult indeed to hold on a straight line at any speed. The wandering appears to be slightly improved by additional tightness on the front shock absorbers but this improvement is very slight. Whilst the car was laid up, the track of the wheels was checked and it was found that the front wheels were toed out five thirtyseconds of an inch. There is no adjustment by which this can be altered, but it may be the cause of this wandering. It is under- | ||
