To R.{Sir Henry Royce} from EFC c. E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} BJ. c. Da.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design} By.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} c. Wor.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} Rg{Mr Rowledge}, ORIGINAL EFC3/T22.12.27. SPLITDORF MAGNETOS TYPE SS{S. Smith}:31545 and 15890. Of the above two magnetos No.31545 has been examined and tested on the bench, and the results of this are contained in my assistant's report WC.56 attached. It is interesting to note that the electrical performance of this machine is very much better than corresponding results taken of the B.T.H., Watford, or R.Bosch machines. At the same time, however, the design does not strike one as being of a high degree of reliability, more particularly as regards the distributor. The report of the comparative performance of this machine with the R.{Sir Henry Royce} Bosch and Scintilla, will be made when we have got together all the data for this and the Scintilla machine, having already got the R.{Sir Henry Royce} Bosch type GF.12 performance. The outstanding item of superior performance of the Splitdorf is that of very low sparking speed in the retarded position and a phenomenal low speed in the advanced position (30 r.p.m. on our test), the low speed sparking generally being at a lower speed than any other magneto we have tested. At the moment we have not done similar tests wit on the other machine No.15890. EFC. | ||
