To R.{Sir Henry Royce} from Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Gry.{Shadwell Grylls} c. Sg.{Arthur F. Sidgreaves - MD} c. Wor.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} c. Da.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design} PY. ORIGINAL Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Gry.{Shadwell Grylls}1/AD4.9.31. 27 HP. BUICK 8-CYLINDER. X3317. We have recently had an opportunity of trying one of these cars which had done 11,000 miles and also of examining it with the bottom half of the crankcase removed. The crankshaft had 5 bearings, and balance weights were fitted to balance the resultant load on the bearings, these being forgings drilled to get the mass correct. The damper on No.2 web was driven with laminated springs and had at least 100 lbs.ins. inertia., the springs being very high rating. On the road the engine was very smooth except for torque reaction at 9 and 18 M.P.H. - the lower period rattling the windows, and also a torsional vibration at 60 M.P.H. which we believe to be about 3200 R.P.M. The power fell off at about 3500 R.P.M. but the engine was remarkably smooth at 45 M.P.H. in 2nd. or about 4000 R.P.M. The crankcase of cast iron had an average thickness of .225".
