The motor is mounted in front and carried on the hub.
They were not very au fait with this at Paterson as this job is produced at Buffalo.

Smiths V.P. propellers temporarily suspended due to fracture of hollow steel blades. Curtiss blades are dural.

Metal propellers are the only ones used here.

Reduction gears are found necessary but their ratios are slightly higher than ours. Tip speeds are kept to about 900 ft/sec.

This tip sections have been found to be an advantage in efficiency.

Mechanical Failures.

Thermo couples extensively used under spark plugs.
They find a rapid temperature rise always proceeds trouble.
It was found on one engine that cured failures were entirely eliminated by dropping the temperature 100°F.{Mr Friese} and keeping the R.M.P. and speed the same and using parts of same design. High peak pressure blamed.

Ethyl.

Only troubles encountered are rusting of valves and liners - but only after prolonged storage - 5 months.
Practically no trouble with cooled valves. Less carbon deposit found in cylinders and plugs when using ethyl - extensive proof of this on the various Air Liners.

Aircraft Brands. Fighters.

Closely guarded - gathered they were in excess of 200 R.P.H. Twelve passenger craft - Lockheed & Stinson cruise at 150 M.P.H.

Stream Lining.

Secret list so far. (See sketch 7.)

I have some interesting notes on bombing and Deck landing best discussed when I am back.
