261.. RmlO/R.{Sir Henry Royce} 10th March, 1938. E.A. Thomas, Esq., Bramshott Old Mill, Near Liphook, Hampshire. Dear Thomas, Thanks for your letter. I have asked our Service Dept. to send you the pieces you require. With regard to the failure of your carburetter hot spot silencer, if you have been using Ethyl I am not altogether surprised that it has failed, because this, undoubtedly, accelerates corrosion, and we find the greatest difficulty in getting silencers to stand up to it, even after five years. This does not mean that we think Ethyl is a bad fuel, but it is hard on exhaust systems. In our experience, American silencers last less than 12 months under the same sort of conditions. If you have not been using Ethyl, then I am rather surprised at the little the silencer has gone, but it may be due to condensation. With regard to your brakes, I should try graphite on the springs in a small quantity. Automobile racing is great fun when you have a Government behind you, but I have yet to know any firm who made much money out of it. We are all in this business for bread and butter. It is only natural that the public should think we concentrate on aircraft engines, but I can assure you that we are putting more energy into motor-car work than ever previously. Yours sincerely, | ||
