1175 Experimental Dept. Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/Swdl.{Len H. Swindell}18/MH.{M. Huckerby} 5th. July 1938. Messrs.Leyland Motors Ltd., Leyland, LANCS. For the attention of Mr.V.W.Pilkington. Dear Sirs, With reference to your letter of the 30th. ult. we should be obliged if you could give us some further particulars of the treatment given to your crankcases, in which we are interested not only in the results obtained but also in regard to the cost of this procedure for the actual paint and the labour time expended. We should like you to confirm our interpretation of the information given in your letter, which as we see it consists of:- Cast Iron Crankcases. Inside sprayed with 'Sellonite' grey filler. Aluminium Crankcases. Untreated top half, lower half sump being painted inside with dark grey primer. If our interpretation is correct we should like to know why you treat the lower half and not the top half. Regarding the 'Sellonite' filler which you use on the cast iron parts, is this 'Sellonite filler' unsatisfactory for aluminium and what advantage is obtained in hand painting with grey primer? Doesthe latter require baking after treatment? Our present method is to spray the inside of our aluminium crankcases with linseed oil and bake, which is actually quite an expensive procedure which with overheads comes to approx. 10/- per engine. | ||
