To BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} from Da.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design} c. to CJ. c. to Wor.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} c. to Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} Handwritten: X4548 MOVE 1 EXPORT CHASSIS FWB Da{Bernard Day - Chassis Design}1/M28.8.22. EXPORT CHASSIS - FRONT AXLE X.4547. We send herewith N.Sch. 1317 shewing the front axle fitted with front wheel brakes. It will be seen that the lines followed are those of the Hotchkiss patent, and as recently mentioned by Mr. Royce we should like to see whether the difference between this and the Hotchkiss is of a nature to make it patentable. The rod pulls instead of pushes, and is on the rear side of the axle instead of the front side. It is thought that the Hotchkiss patent must be very narrow. This axle is intended for use with the 1st. move in the X change, and it is designed on the assumption that radius rods are used, the frame is narrowed up at the front, and that a new front engine casing is used. Particulars of this latter will be sent soon. We believe the drawing is self explanatory, but we should like to say that though aluminium shoes are shewn, we may wish to change to steel shoes, as we think that the steel would make a more satisfactory job, having regard to the limitations. As the clearance between the cross steering lever, and the brake carrier, and the clearance between the cross steering lever and the brake operating rod are rather close, we should like Derby to set these clearances out as a check, and advise us if they find any difficulty.
