HS{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/RH{R. Hollingworth}2/AD6.11.29 contd. -2- It is therefore apparent that for touring work in hilly country an owner would be justified in considering that his brakes required adjustment when he had worn only .010 off the shoes. This trouble is aggravated by the fact that thick rubber mats are sometimes fitted in the front of cars with slots in them for the pedals. These further reduce the available pedal travel. It may be argued that E.A.C.14. which has run far without trouble is similar to the Phantom II as regards brakes. The only point of material difference is in the direct bracing leverage which controls the pedal travel. On 14-EX. the leverage is 24 - 1, on Phantom II 28.5 - 1. This small difference in direct bracing taking the case mentioned above, would enable just twice the amount, or .020 to be worn off the shoes before they required re-lining. Recommendation. We recommend that we should at once alter the direct bracing on all cars to reduce the pedal travel by 25%. This can be accomplished very easily as indicated in the attached sketch.
