RE: PROPOSAL TO RETURN TO NON-CASEHARDENED SPLINES. It is important in carrying out any experiments in this direction to ensure the following points being arranged for :- (a). The use of a shaft, the shaft should be made in 3 1/2% nickel steel with a brinell of 321/341. (b). The gears should be made in SZNX. which is the harder quality of 5% case hardened nickel steel. The splines will then be suitable for the service which is proposed for them. Personally I see no reason why in the first place we should have departed from this, which is our standard practice.
