The performance of thermostat-controlled radiator shutters and recommendations for improvement.

Fitting a spring giving 13 lbs. load in the shutter fully open position in the thermostat we get -

Shutters start opening - 64°C. }
" Fully open - 71°C. } FREE SHUTTERS
" Start to close - 60°C. } 2.
" Fully Closed - 52°C.

These figures appear to be reasonable but much better results would be obtained if we could fit a return spring which raised the shutters to be fully open at 75°C. If the fully open temperature is to be limited to 70°C. the power obtainable from the calorstat is greatly reduced, and though, as we have shown, it is possible to get a reasonable result when the shutters are clean and perfectly free, it is most probable that the operation will become unsatisfactory as the shutters collect grit, dirt, water, etc. We therefore suggest that either the full open temperature should be allowed to be 75°C. or the next size calorstat should be fitted. The attached sketch shows what this looks like in the existing top tank.
All the figures taken on the radiator were obtained without vibration. Vibration improves the shutter operation, but clearly the quantity of vibration likely to occur is indefinite.
