Messrs. Rolls Royce Ltd.,
Derby.

For the attention of Mr. A.{Mr Adams} Martindale.

Dear Sirs,

I was indeed sorry to receive your letter of the 11th of November advising us that RU also was not free from squeaks, and also that it had caused considerable damage to drums.

I was interested to note that you had obtained the best results from American linings made by the Raybestos Manhattan Co. or possibly the Thermoid Co. You refer to these as "moulded liners" and say that you believe we do not wish to undertake the manufacture of such an article. I am at a loss to understand how you have reached this conclusion because we do already make many types of moulded liners and to attempt to match your requirements would be prepared to make many others. Strangely enough, what reluctance we have is due to the unfortunate experience we have had with such linings, in particular as regards scoring. This appears to be just another of those inexplicable differences in experience, however.

Your letter is the first indication we have had that you have found a squeak-free lining and we should be very grateful indeed if you would give us the opportunity of examining a sample that you have found satisfactory. There is no doubt whatever that we can reproduce it because we can, if necessary, obtain the Making Particulars from the States.

In conclusion I should just like to point out that it is highly improbable that the American lining which has given you satisfaction will have been designed specifically to overcome squeal, because squealing is a feature which is never commented upon by our American colleagues.

I trust you will be able to give us the opportunity of examining the lining as I suggest because I have not the slightest doubt that we can reproduce it.

Yours faithfully,
FERODO LIMITED
J Moughey.
Chief Chemist & Director.
