Dear Mr. Bentley,

re. CONTINUOUS CURRENT MOTORS.

I have already written to you to say that these should have steel carcases, and be of the 4 pole type, with inter-poles fitted where necessary. It is assumed that sometimes fans will be fitted, and sometimes not, and that ball or roller bearings will be universal. I am particularly anxious that the design shall be standardised with the minimum variety in pattern and in size, so that the manufacturing proposition shall be as simple as possible.

The shaft must in all cases be of extraordinary liberal diameter so as to reduce the trouble from flexure to the minimum, (and kept as short as possible for many reasons.)

The main bearing - a deep race single groove ball bearing of ample size - shall be fitted into a housing with thread and nut so that it can take the end play of any character we are likely to meet.

The minor bearing will be fitted to a plain unthreaded housing to retain the grease, provision being made for oiling or greasing both bearings.

The main bearing may require a lubricating tube connection to render it accessible.

A stauffer or grease gun scheme should be adopted.

Regarding the rockers and brush holders my impressions are that the scheme of using a bakelite disc is open to objection especially in the larger sizes, or in positions in which the machine is likely to get very hot. The following comments apply to the specimen rocker and brush holder sent to me, which I now return.
