GENERAL REPORT ON THE RR.F. ENGINE
LONG DURATION TEST.
In our previous reports on the above test, we have submitted the figures and data obtained as they were available and we now submit a general report of the whole test with constructive criticism and suggestions for consideration in connection with further experimental development of an engine for long duration flight work.
Apart from the demonstration of reliability and economy of the engine operating under these special conditions the test has proved of considerable value in yielding much valuable information which was unobtainable from the usual short duration tests made under similar conditions of power, speed and mixture strength.
We have now proved conclusively that the F.{Mr Friese} engine can operate for indefinite periods without detrimental effects to the valves, sparking plugs or pistons upon very weak mixtures. Further considerable economy of consumption becomes possible upon the throttled loads by working with a mixture some 10% to 13% below that giving the max. power for that particular degree of throttling and thereby losing power to the extent of 5% to 7%. Such a gain in economy becomes of considerable importance in connection with long duration flights.
Naturally, the distribution plays an important
