To R. {Sir Henry Royce} from EFC. {E. Fowler Clarke - Electrical Engineer} c. BJ. BY. {R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} c. Wor. {Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} PN. {Mr Northey} X8996 EFC {E. Fowler Clarke - Electrical Engineer} 1/T7.6.26. LUCAS MAGNETO & PRESENT STANDARD WATFORD MAGNETO. X6793 For the reasons herein detailed it is considered expedient to proceed with tests of the recent Lucas type ER6. magneto. Of these two magnetos the Lucas is undoubtedly the more modern in general design. The lower price of the Lucas magneto is a result not so much of using cheaper material and inferior workmanship but by using modern methods of production. For instance, the pole pieces are cast integral with the armature tunnel casting thereby saving time, labour and expense in manufacture, and actually making a sounder and more accurate job than machining each part separately. Also the liberal use of die castings cheapens production and it would appear to be worth the initial expense. It is true to a certain extent that Lucas magnetos have not had a good reputation, but they now have behind them the technical ability and wide experience of Dr. Turner, the recognised magneto expert. In conversation with him one appreciates that he knows his job thoroughly well, and that he would spare no pains in producing a thoroughly sound and reliable magneto. Previous magnetos which Messrs. Lucas have manufactured have been largely produced for low price cars, and it does not appear to follow that they would not be | ||
