STRONGER SPRINGS ON BATTERY IGNITION CONTACT BREAKER LEVER.

The performance of these thicker gauge springs during a 10,000 mile bench test on the rig has not been entirely satisfactory.

On one of the distributors, the contact breaker lever seized twice owing to the excessive side thrust on the pivot, showing that the lever is not set up in the correct position, by the spring, i.e. almost floating on the pivot.

On the other distributor the spring fractured, at the point where the bending moment was greatest, after about 9000 miles, this showing that the spring was being stressed abnormally.

The USA. Bosch and the Remy levers are fitted with springs having a small rating and big set (apparently the right combination for this work) and the levers are almost floating on the pivot when set up in position.

With the present RR. design we do not consider that stronger springs would perform satisfactorily (mechanically).
