REAR ANCHORAGE OF FRONT SPRINGS. X.9410 X.9430

We send herewith N.sch.1775. shewing a suggested reinforcement for the frame at the front spring anchorage. We think the cause of the failure is principally a buckling on the flexible sheet metal of the frame between the tie-bar bracket and the spring anchorage, and we suggest that if this were locally reinforced it would probably make all the difference to the frame standing up. We have looked into various other alternatives such as completely boxing in the frame, or using a stiffer similar to that on the EAC. steering box, but both these schemes seem unnecessarily heavy and strong.

It will be noticed that the scheme we send does not alter anything except possibly the existing stiffener for the spring bracket, but we think you will be able to use existing pressings possibly by slightly adapting them.

We make out fairly heavy loads on the sheet metal flange of the frame due to assumed loads in the tie-bars and from the bumping wheel. There is also a considerable crushing stress in the bolts and a moderately high general stress over the frame section, and we think that there is no doubt that if there is a force buckling the bottom flange it will be certain to fatigue through in time. The proposed stiffener should greatly reinforce the frame at this point.

We have sent this to Mr. Royce in the meantime we presume you will be able to fix it up for bumping.
