G.11. LIGHT SPRING DIAGRAM. NOT FIRING. EXHAUST CONDITIONS VARIED. The light spring diagrams taken not firing are very much clearer than those taken firing. Much the same result was observed when the valve timing was advanced and retarded as occurred when firing. The bump appears to be mainly caused by back pressure which fills the cylinder after the exhaust has dropped towards atmospheric pressure. The last poart of the exhaust valve opening seems to be ineffective so that the piston on its upward stroke compresses the contents of the cylinder causing a bump even with a free exhaust. ----------------- | ||
