To R.{Sir Henry Royce} & E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} from EFC. c. CJ. & FN. c. Ds. EV.{Ivan Evernden - coachwork} Nor. c. EP.{G. Eric Platford - Chief Quality Engineer} X.2894. EIKA TUNGSTEN POINTS. Further to our EFC4/T20.8.24, and finally as regards tungsten ignition contact breaker points (unless R.{Sir Henry Royce} instructs that further experiments be made), the last set of points referred to in the last par. of the report mentioned as running on 6-GII has now completed 15,583 miles on that chassis. They have been removed for examination and are being forwarded to R.{Sir Henry Royce} for his inspection. The general condition of these points, in view of the amount of rubbing they have undergone, is considered to be good, the condition being as follows :- Lever point. Wear - practically nil. Surface good; discoloured dark grey, presumably through oxidation. Screw Point. Wear about 50%. Surface fair only; discoloured same as lever point. There have been no reports of any trouble with these points from the testers during the time they have been running. Their general condition after the 10,000 miles test may be said to be much about the same as the average platinum points. No previous tests on tungsten points have given any better result than the present. There is on the lever (AB) a bone grey fibre rubbing block, to which reference will shortly be made and in a report dealing with the experimental work on such rubbing blocks shortly to be issued.
