PHANTOM III. VALVE GEAR.

(1) On fitting several sets of experimental solid valve gear we have noticed that the valve springs when in the fully lifted position are choc-a-bloc or almost so.

This we consider is too fine a limit to be safe on Production and recommend that the measurement of .475 by which amount the guide (E.88708) stands proud of the cylinder head should be reduced to .450.

The alteration to spring load will not be sufficient to make any running difference.

(2) In order to complete the instructions for the solid valve gear, we confirm that for the present IB.175 springs should be used.

(3) Although the solid valve gear ran 17,000 miles on 32-EX. with a satisfactory degree of quietness we are not issuing a standardisation sheet until 32-EX. degree of quietness has been confirmed on other experimental cars so fitted.
