Smith} EXHAUST PIPES. N. sch. 2824. X7230 Two or three silencers should be made up to find the best for silence and simplicity of construction. I think they should have all the pipes 3" outside and also a set with 2 1/2" outside. To begin with use a piece of 5" or 5 1/2" pipe for the front silencer with ends pressings. If you can weld directly into the 5" pipe you can weld directly into the end pressing and so save much time. One should be stayed from the frame as N. sch. 2825., the other should be stayed from the engine as N. sch. 2823. When you reach the main silencer I prefer the sliding joint in the straight and the single bend into main silencer at an angle. The sliding joint should have both ports of non-oxidable steel. I should not attempt the special sliding joint unless we fail with the plain one; 18-EX. is working OK. now the sling is fitted. It has occurred to me that we might like to ensure that the pipe could not creep out by the device shewn in the sketch. (1) The rear silencer should be as at present. (2) The new sch. with front chamber and double internal pipe. (3) The simplest sch. with single internal pipe. 2 or 3 straps to hold collar at fixed distance, removable for erection. SKETCH SHEWN PIPES HOT. R.{Sir Henry Royce} [Text associated with sketch] Clearance when cold for difference of temperature. A neater job would be Rings forgings Collar with trunnions. welded on.
