X4614 Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} BY3-P31.10.23. RUSTLESS STEEL. CHANGE SPEED LEVERS - 40/50. I put forward the American proposal to Messrs. Firths, and ordered material, although personally I did not think the steel was the correct one to use. In the result Messrs. Firths took up the matter very strongly, giving me facts and figures to shew that the steel was altogether wrong for the service for which we proposed to put it. I have put the whole of the facts of the case before R.{Sir Henry Royce} with Messrs. Firths letter and asked for his decision as to whether we are to go on with it, or not. Messrs. Firths confirm that the material is not machinable, except when it is brought to a very soft state indeed and that then it cannot be hardened afterwards except by excessive cold working, heat treatment being valueless.
