RE. BEARING SITUATION IN FRANCE.

The bearing situation is not as alarming as was indicated by Mr. Allen, but is of sufficient importance to have the full support of Derby. Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}' views were very strong but were taken in view, of replacing main bearings with a bearing metal of unknown quality. The position is a matter of policy.

With all due respects to Hd.{Mr Hayward/Mr Huddy} he is not in a position to compare mileages, speed, etc., between English and French Owners. The conditions are as far apart as the North and South Poles. The attitude of Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} that we wont sell cars in France if we have to replace all bearings within that gurantee is alright providing we dont sell cars over here, but the situation is, we have sold a good number and it is a question of policy whether we keep our good name or whether we are indifferent. One of the chief assets Sr. sells the car on, is the engine will not let the Owner down, and to a Frenchman it is an insult if a total breakdown of a mechanical part occurs. The news does not stay in France as many Owners have confidential friends in England and other countries. The position at the moment is, Sr. is aware that many of the 3.1/2 Litre Bentleys are on their last legs regarding the life of the main bearings and con-rods. He wants to stave off the final breakdown, and to save the Firm's good name, has rather over-stated the position. It is quite possible that many of the cars would not need a complete set of bearings, and latest tests show that, white metal is giving quite good results for the mains, and can still be used with confidence. Using common sense and not getting into a flat spin, the situation could be dealt with in a normal way and less charges than what has been stated. One fact must not be overlooked. The English Bentley Owner travelling abroad is on the increase, what about their bearings.
