RE. ALTERATIONS TO AMERICAN CHASSIS. X3614

In reply to your memo. HJ/PY5/D15123., would you kindly note Mr. Royce comments as follows:-

(1) AIR PUMP (POWER) ALTERATION OF VALVE FROM BRONZE TO CASE-HARDENED NICKEL STEEL - (ALT.3197/A.{Mr Adams})

Mr. Royce thinks there is the danger of the steel valve rusting, and also says we do not recognise this valve. We have never used anything like it at all on the chassis. Our valves in Derby on the air pumps should be made like theirs, or theirs like ours.

(2) EXHAUST FITTINGS, REAR CHANGE TO SMALL PRESSED NOZZLE - (ALT. 3253/A.{Mr Adams})

Mr. Royce remarks that our experience is that the pipe formed in this way is not sufficiently silent. Has the latest pressed sheet metal exhaust nozzle (which was in existence before the war in Derby) failed? The heavy cast nozzles should never have been used. We are experimentally adding a stay to the swan neck pipe from the frame, and this is what we think should be used in conjunction with the pressed sheet metal nozzle. We have such an arrangement on the 20.HP. chassis.
[Handwritten note: Bracket]

(3) PROPELLER SHAFT ADDITION OF OIL-THROWING TAPER (ALT.3241/A.{Mr Adams})

Mr. Royce approves, and Mr. Hives should test and confirm.

(4) PROPOSED MODIFICATION TO VALVE SPRING WASHER GIVING LENGTHENED FIT ON VALVE STEM (ALT.3260/A.{Mr Adams})

Mr. Royce thinks this good. We have had valve spring washers in use of this type, for years, but having been on test with some other feature such as stiff valve springs, they have never become separately standardised.
[Handwritten note: Washers]

(5) INTERNAL CONTROL SPHERE BEARING REMOVAL OF THREADS ON LOW-ER END (ALT. 3233/A.{Mr Adams})

Mr. Royce approves, but says avoid hammering. We detach the tie-rod from the top at the rear end, and then work the front ends free. Mr. Hives to confirm.
