-2- They think the centrifugal easier to silence from Donsenburg's results but don't know much about it. Anyhow, they are starting a considerable research. GEARBOXES. A factor has been established that if a box will stand 16 hours full torque second gear on the dynamometer, it will not give trouble in the hands of the American public. A shorter period is used for bottom gear, but I do not know what this is. BRAKES. E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} asked for information re simplified brakes schemes. These seem equally divided between - (1) Bendix Cable System. This is exceedingly simple, weighs nothing, has self servoing shoes and looks absolutely repulsive. I cannot believe it will prove able to deal with aerodynamic speeds. (2) Lockhead. This is equally simple, but is a better job. The servo used is the B.K. vacuum booster which works well. Am bringing one back. SHOCK DAMPERS. I enclose a sketch of the new Spicer shock damper. Hudsons are using it. It avoids bell cranks and might fit in with some knee action scheme. BIJUR LUBRICATION. Being used only by Packard but Cadillac's are playing with the fully automatic induction operated scheme. The whole system of connection is preferred, and I think is excellent. Our present Banjos on the brake gear are diabolical. One is almost bound to crack the solder joint owing to the Banjo turning with the retaining bolt when unscrewing. I speak from practical experience. | ||
